2019 Community Garden Signup

The 2019 Community Garden Sign up will be on Saturday, April 13th form 10:30 - 12:00pm, downstairs at the public library. Fees are as follows:

20$ bed deposit
PLUS
$25 annual membership per couple or family.
For friends sharing a plot, $25 for first gardener and $15 for each additional gardener.
12 hours per plot volunteer hours is required in the garden over the course of the season.

Bed Assignment and Orientation

New gardeners are asked to show up to the 2018 bed assignment and garden orientation on Saturday, May 5th at the garden between 10-noon. We are located at the base of the clay cliffs at the corner of Ray Street and Seventh Avenue. Bring $5 for the shed key deposit!
Existing gardeners can show up to pay their membership dues.

2017 Annual General Meeting

The Downtown Urban Gardeners Society (DUGS) is holding their AGM on Wednesday, January 17th. Come out and socialize with your fellow gardeners, discuss the 2017 season, current projects and help plan ahead for 2018.

Remember to bring gloves and wear appropriate footwear. There is a biffy on site but remember we do not have water yet so make sure you bring your own for drinking. Should be a beautiful day to get some of those hours behind you!

The 2016 DUGS AGM will be held Thursday, January 19th at 506 Cook Street (upstairs). There will be a Potluck Social at 6pm followed by the AGM at 7pm. All are welcome!

Bees at the Community Garden

Show your support for the Whitehorse Community Garden apiary proposal by sending an email to publicinput@Whitehorse.ca before April 25th. Approval of Bylaw 2016-16 will amend City of Whitehorse zoning to allow an apiary to be included in the community garden located downtown on

7th Avenue. Honey bees at the community garden will be sweet!

2016 Garden Sign Up

The sign up for the 2016 growing season will be Saturday, April 9th at the Whitehorse Public Library Meeting Room from noon until 2pm.

This is a first come first serve signup (I can't hold any plots for anyone).

Those gardeners from 2015 who fulfilled their volunteer time will get first choice of the plots. Anyone who did not complete their 12 hours of volunteer time will be expected to complete the remainder if they expect to get their plot back from last season. Otherwise, your name will just register in the general signup with the new gardeners.
Fees for new gardeners are $20 annual membership fee + $20 bed deposit + $5 shed key deposit for a total of $45.
Returning gardeners only pay the $20 annual membership (and the $5 shed key deposit if you need a new one)
We accept cash or cheque.

Welcome to the Garden! 2015

 

A  seasonal approach to hands on gardening skills that will help you grow food.

 

Rent a garden bed at a local farm- and learn to grow.

 

Join long time Yukon organic gardener, Shiela Alexandrovich at her Wheaton River Gardens on Annie Lake Road for seven half day workshops that will give you seasonal experience and confidence to get growing.

Shiela will provide 125’x30’ beds for participants to use. Therese are to be started from scratch, in and area that has had 2 years of green manure. She will provide watering and frost protection as needed. Participants

will take home the produce grown , and have the knowledge to store  and preserve food for the winter .

 

Cost for the rental of one raised bed – and all the produce that grows there will be yours…

$ 75.00 for full season

 

This includes the education provided by Sheila  as well as seeds and bedding plants and all other materials as needed.

This workshop will have space for 6-8 people and will cover the following outline, realizing that weather may re-arrange our schedule for us!

 

All workshops are   1pm to 4:30, on Sundays.

 

·         May 17                 orientation, bed planning, seed choices, bedding plants

                               ( starting, time and care) and basic organics

·         May 24                 making raised beds, organic  amendments, various planting styles, hoops and

                               covers – Prepping and planting - Ready…GO!

·         June 14                eating weeds, thinning, compost/manure teas, top dressing, early harvest

·         June 28                harvest, thin, weed, succession planting, maintenance

·         July 19                 thinning, weeding, fermented  pickles, drying, teas (weeds, wild, planted)

·         Aug 16                 harvest, prep for storage, pickling, seed saving,

·         Sept 6                  final root harvest , root storage, putting things to bed

2015 Garden Season Sign Up

It's that time of year again. The annual garden sign up will be at the Whitehorse Food Bank at 306 Alexander Street on April 11th from 12-2pm.
Fees are as follows:
$20 bed deposit (not necessary if you are a returning gardener from 2014)
$20 annual membership fee
$5 shed key deposit (not necessary if you already have one from 2014)

DUGS will be holding its 2014 AGM on January 14th, 2014 at 7:00 pm at 504 Cook Street (Upstairs Mary House). There will be a potluck and social at 6:00pm to lead into the meeting. Anyone is welcome.

2014 Garden Sign Up

Hello All!
Spring is on its way and that means time to sign up for your plot at the Whitehorse Community Garden for the 2014 growing season.
The sign up is scheduled for Saturday, April 5th from 12-2pm at the Whitehorse Food Bank. The cost for new members is $45.00 ($20 annual membership, $20 bed deposit and $5 key deposit) and the cost for returning members is $20.00 (annual membership). All gardeners are expected to give 12 hours of volunteer work back the garden.

As always, sign up is first come, first serve and each gardener is allowed to sign up for one plot only. Those gardeners whose volunteer hours are in good standing and wish to return, are given first choice and preference to their existing plots or a new plot if they choose to move. Bed assignment will not happen until the beginning of May and we will keep you posted on that.

End of Season

As another gardening season is about to wrap up, I'd like to send out a few reminders...

Work Bees
The Wednesday night work bee will continue for the rest of September. The weather has been holding out fairly well, so for the sake of the food bank deliveries if it continues to do so by the end of the month, I may add an extra one into October. We're losing our light rather quickly now so they will likely be abbreviated. I will be holding one last Saturday work bee on September 28th from 10-2pm. This is just a final chance to make up for any of the 12 hours you were not able to put in and we'll be concentrating on end of season tasks. Putting barrels away, hoses, compost etc. The City will likely turn the water off this week as well.

Plot Cleanup
If you are not planning to return next year and would like to get your bed deposit back, you must clean out your plot completely. Remove your vegetables or any weeds that may be left in the plot and turn the soil. This must be done and I must be notified by September 30th in order to get your $20 deposit back. Those who plan to return and stay in the same plot may leave their plot until the spring if they wish. Those who plan to return but would like to change plots are asked to clean their plots by the end of the season.

Compost
A reminder to put your weeds in the weed compost. Anything else from your garden can go in the regular compost. The more we can get in the pile this fall, the more compost we'll have for the beds in the spring! Anyone who would like to drop off their compost at the garden over the winter is more than welcome to do so.

Water Jugs
Some of you have been taking advantage of Russell's offer of old water jugs from Yukon Springs to use as planters. He would like me to pass on that he will have more, between 25 and 100, for the next work bee on September 18th. First come, first serve.

Greenhouse
If you used the greenhouse this year, please clean out your containers and take them home. I don't mind if you store your containers in the greenhouse as long as they are cleaned out, stacked neatly and clearly marked with your name.
On a container note, anyone with extra containers or cloth or any other 'accessories' for your plot, please put these away neatly and so they don't blow out of the plot over the winter.

Plant a Row
This year has been a great year for the Plant a Row program. We've taken approximately 478lbs of vegetables to the food bank to date! Our biggest season so far. Our goal is 500lbs so anyone with veg to spare let me know or meet us on one of the last two Wednesdays when we do the collection. A big thank you to all that have made their donations. Big and small, every little bit counts!

I think that's it for now. I have some updates that I still need to post in regards to the on goings of this past summer. I'll get to them yet. Until then, I hope this post finds everyone well and warm. -k.
